March newsletter
Notable Notes
- The Sooner Cup on Steroids ran at the Rock Creek Riding area
in Tishomingo, OK on March 15th & 16th. The event was unique
in that all of the club-level competition classes ran in the mornings
both days leaving the afternoons free for everyone to enjoy watching
seven riders compete in the Pro class for part of the $6,400 purse
money; and they did not disappoint. If the pros thought they could
skate by the Texhoma boys without too much of a challenge, they were
sorely mistaken. The Texhoma club served up some monumental
challenges and put it to the pros right out of the chute. The
entrance rock on section 1 was a full-throttle blast up an almost
8 foot near-vertical wall with a second step right at the top. Thoroughly
entertaining for the spectators and a bit of a shock to the system
for the competitors.
In addition to running the pros by themselves in the afternoon
so everyone could watch, the organizers had them run their sections
in groups of three; that is, all of the pros would ride three sections
three times before moving on to the next three sections. This
made it possible for all the spectators to gather in one area before
moving on. The vocal crowd enjoyed each other’s company
and newbies learned what was going on from the old guard as they mingled.
Patrick Smage, Cody Webb, Chris Florin, Will Ibsen, Colton Haaker,
Ronnie Commo III and Texas native Josiah Mizell all competed in the pro
class. Josiah made Texas proud with his “never-say-die” attitude
and all-around positive outlook. He definitely had the loudest
fan base at the event and rode the wheels off of his GasGas to take 6th
in the overall. Very nice. Josiah was buoyed by his posse
of minders that kept him out of harm’s way both days. Good
work boys!
Patrick Smage took home a $2,560 check for his 1st place finish. Will
Ibsen pocketed $1,536, Cody Webb in third managed $1,216 with Florin
at $768 and Haaker tucking away $320.
